What makes this Spanish and Surf Summer Camp in Spain different?

Nacel's Spanish and Surf Summer Camp in Gijón combines language learning, surfing with Spanish teenagers and daily immersion in a local host family.

Unlike a traditional residential summer camp, this program offers a different way to experience Spain. You will spend your mornings surfing with Spanish and international teenagers, attend Spanish classes in the afternoon and return to your host family for dinner and everyday family life. You will also learn to get around Gijón independently, using public transportation to travel between your accommodation, the language school and the surf school.

The program includes:

  • 15 hours of Spanish lessons per week in small international classes.
  • 2 hours of surfing every weekday with qualified instructors.
  • Two weeks of accommodation with a Spanish host family, including all meals.
  • Cultural activities, including a Gijón orientation, an escape room and a boat trip.
  • Local transportation, airport transfers and local Nacel support.

This is a great option for teenagers who already study Spanish at school and would like to become more confident speaking the language in everyday situations.

Why choose Gijón for a Spanish summer camp?

Gijón is a lively coastal city in Asturias, in northern Spain. Located on the Cantabrian Sea, it offers sandy beaches, a welcoming local atmosphere and easy access to the green landscapes of northern Spain. Unlike the busy Mediterranean tourist resorts, Gijón gives international students the opportunity to discover a different side of Spanish culture. The city combines beaches, local restaurants, traditional neighborhoods and an active outdoor lifestyle.

Asturias is part of what is often called Green Spain, a region known for its green countryside, rugged coastline and proximity to the Picos de Europa mountains.
Gijón also enjoys milder summer weather than many destinations in southern Spain, making it particularly suitable for surfing and outdoor activities.
For teenagers, the city offers a manageable environment where they can become familiar with their surroundings and gradually gain confidence getting around independently.

Where will you study Spanish in Gijón?

Spanish lessons take place at an Instituto Cervantes-accredited language school in the center of Gijón.
The school provides a welcoming learning environment for international students, with modern facilities and small classrooms designed to encourage interaction and participation.
School facilities include:

  • Bright classrooms with whiteboards, projectors and modular tables.
  • Wi-Fi throughout the school.
  • Comfortable common areas with seating, books and board games.
  • A central location that is accessible by public transportation.
  • Small Spanish classes with a maximum of 12 students.

How are Spanish lessons organized?

You will attend 3 hours of Spanish lessons every weekday afternoon, for a total of 30 hours during the two-week program.
Classes are organized for international teenagers and are adapted to their Spanish level, from A1 to B1. Lessons give students the opportunity to develop their Spanish language skills in a structured setting and then put what they have learned into practice during their activities and time with their host family. The combination of classroom learning and everyday language immersion helps students become more comfortable using Spanish in different situations.

Activities

Will I surf with Spanish teenagers?

Yes! During our Nacel's program the program, you will have the opportunity to take surf lessons alongside local Spanish teenagers. The surf school welcomes young people from Gijón and other parts of Spain, as well as international students. This means that you will not spend all your time with other language learners.

Surf lessons are taught in Spanish, so you will hear instructions, learn sports-related vocabulary and practice understanding spoken Spanish while enjoying an outdoor activity.
You may also have opportunities to chat with Spanish teenagers between sessions and make connections through a shared interest in surfing.

What do the surf lessons include?

You will enjoy 2 hours of surfing every weekday morning, for a total of 20 hours during your stay.
Your surf experience includes:

  • Qualified surf instructors.
  • Groups of approximately 20 participants.
  • An instructor-to-student ratio of approximately 1:7.
  • Surfboard and wetsuit.
  • Lessons delivered in Spanish.
  • Civil liability and accident insurance for sports activities.

The lessons bring together Spanish and international teenagers, creating opportunities to interact naturally while learning and practicing surfing.

What activities are included in the summer program?

In addition to Spanish lessons and surfing, the program includes three organized activities to help students discover Gijón and spend time with other international teenagers.

  • Gijón city orientation: on the first Monday, you will take part in an orientation to discover Gijón, become familiar with the city and learn how to get around using public transportation.
  • Escape room: work together with other international students to solve puzzles and complete an escape room challenge. This activity takes place once during the two-week stay.
  • Boat trip: discover Gijón and its coastline from the water during an organized boat trip, also included once during the program.

Outside scheduled lessons and activities, students spend time with their host families or enjoy some free time in Gijón, following the program rules and curfew.

What happens during the weekend?

The weekend is spent with your Spanish host family rather than following a full schedule of organized camp activities.

You will share meals, spend time at home, go to the beach or join your family's usual weekend plans. Every family has its own routines, so your experience will depend on your hosts.
This is an important part of the immersion experience, as it gives you more time to listen to and speak Spanish in everyday situations.
