This is an update on my homestay experience with the D. family thus far. It has been excellent! The school was great, my host brother made it easy for me to meet people and find my way around school, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my week of school. The teachers and students were very welcoming and after the first day, I was feeling comfortable. My host family has been ideal also, I’ve had no problems and they’ve facilitated me in every way. I’ve met lots of H's extended family and they are all very welcoming. So far I’ve seen the Christmas markets, explored Paris and its icons, the Amiens gothic cathedral, the Christmas markets, explored the town by bike, met friends and family of my family and much more. I am truly loving my time here and look forward to every day. We are currently setting up the house for Christmas which is enjoyable and lots of family will be arriving soon. The trip is going as well as I could hope for it to be. I am very happy here.

This program allowed me to improve my French speaking and comprehension skills. I spoke to native speakers in many different settings including school, shops and at the house I stayed at. I enjoyed staying with my French host family and seeing the cities and experiencing typical life. I found the school experience very different to Australia because of its length but it was intensive which allowed me more time to learn the language effectively;  although there was definitely a lot of time at school where the learning was above my level and I couldn’t understand everything. I had a great French teacher who helped me with vocab and pronunciation.

Making friends and talking to the students was helpful in learning useful and common phrases. I learnt a lot about French culture and the food. I tried many traditional dishes from the region I stayed in. It also is definitely weird spending so much time with one person, as for me I had a host sister who I had all my classes with and I had to stay with her at all times.

I would recommend this program to people with an intermediate level of French who want to improve. I did 8 weeks which was good but I also think that 6 or 7 weeks is also a good portion of time to build habits and improve French.

I hope this finds you well.  Last year around this time, my son Aaron spent 5 weeks in Nemours, France on a homestay and high school program. He had such a wonderful experience that he kept studying French after returning to Japan. In November, he ended up placing first in the intermediate level of a French speech contest held by the Embassy of France in Japan.  The award is 4 weeks of studying French at a university language school in Besancon this coming August.  I wanted to thank you for starting him on this adventure and for placing him in such a wonderful environment. Lawson’s mom: ‘Lawson has enjoyed a marvelous visit in France and his host family has been extremely generous and gracious during his visit. We are all very grateful for the experience that they have provided him.’

'I echo the sentiments of Lawson's family. I cannot thank you enough for how smoothly the exchange experience has gone for Fergus. He has been hosted by the most beautiful family who have connected with me via email with updates periodically and photos. This has been very much appreciated. Of course, the deeper level of appreciation for the boys is likely to come in the months and years that follow this experience which will have changed their lives and outlook on the world for their lifetime.'  - Mother of Fergus.
