New Zealand is home to extreme sports, spectacular scenery, friendly people and world class education. The school in Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island, welcomes 2300 local students and around 75 exchange students. The school is well known throughout New Zealand for academic excellence and for its arts and music programs. It also places a strong emphasis on outdoor education (tramping, kayaking, climbing and snow caving).
What should I expect from my school year in New Zealand?
The educational system is divided in 3 levels: the Primary School (Ages 5 - 11), the Intermediate School (Ages 11 - 13) and the Secondary School (Ages 13 - 18). The College offers classes to students from Year 9 to Year 13 (secondary school). In Year 9 and 10, there will be 6 classes in the timetable (English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health) and students choose 2 more classes from a range of elective subjects. During the following years, they may choose a larger number of subjects but Maths and English remain compulsory. Exchange students are generally eligible for the Year 13 level although they may study classes at either Year 12 or 13 level depending on their experience and English competency.
The school offers an intensive English program (4 to 10 hours a week) for those in need of English support.
Study Abroad in Christchurch
The College in Christchurch is a large school with extensive grounds and buildings, several grass playing fields, tennis/netball courts and a gymnasium that provide an excellent range of physical activities. Rock bands, orchestra, jazz, dance groups, local and national sporting competitions are part of the school tradition and culture. Exchange students are fully integrated into the co-curricular and wider life of the school through sports, arts, cultural groups, school and community events and special international student activities and events.
