Spanish or Castilian is a Romance language originally spoken in northern Spain and derives from Vulgar Latin. There are important variations in vocabulary between the regions where Spanish is spoken. The formal differences in grammar between peninsular and American Spanish are few, and someone who has learned the dialect of one area will have no trouble using formal speech in the other.

Note that, in some senses, using verbs correctly in Spanish is difficult for native English speakers. Spanish is written with the Latin alphabet.

Which tests prove proficiency in Spanish?

Proficiency exams are used to assess a person's ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language required. Here are some of the exams listed below:

• DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera): the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science are official qualifications of skill levels and mastery of Spanish. This diploma is recognized worldwide by private companies, chambers of commerce, and public and private educational systems.
• SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española): called International Service for the Evaluation of the Spanish Language is a multi-level exam with scores from 0 to 1000 and relates the results of the tests to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The tests are divided into reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and interaction, and oral expression and interaction.

Surviving in Spanish: Basic vocabulary and phrases

We'll give you some tips on Spanish vocabulary and phrases that can help you when you travel abroad.

Spanish greetings are well known and you can start your introduction with "Hola" (Hello), "Me llamo..." (My name is...) and end with "Adiós" (Goodbye). As well as the famous "Muchas gracias" (Thank you very much).

There are simple phrases that can be very useful when you arrive in a country:

No le entiendo (I don't understand)
¿Puede ayudarme? (Can you help me?)
¿Podría repetirlo, por favor? (Can you repeat that, please?)
¿Puede hablar despacio, por favor? (Can you speak slowly, please?)
Estoy perdido. ¿Puede ayudarme a encontrar el camino? (I'm lost. Can you help me find my way?)

And others for everyday use:

Me gustaría pedir... (I would like to ask...)
¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?)
¿Dónde está la estación de autobús/ferrocarril/aeropuerto? (Where is the bus/train/airport station?)
¿Dónde puedo comprar un billete? (Where can I buy a ticket?)
¿Puede recomendarme un buen restaurante? (Can you recommend a good restaurant?)
