Learn a foreign language!

Are you eager to learn a new language? Here are some recommendations on what you can do to achieve it!

  1. Learn on your own: you can begin to learn any language on your own, for example by reading newspapers or books in the language in question, listening to the radio, watching TV or a film you already know in the language in question with or without subtitles in the same language... You can also buy some course books, generally with CDs, or have a look at the Websites that enable you to learn a language online (that can even be free!)

  2. Speak with a native speaker: it's more and more common to find people who want to learn your language while they teach you theirs. You can easily find that on the Internet, as well as a foreign penpal!

  3. Study at University: if you're eager to learn new languages, try to find a University that offers a wide range of language courses. Specific degrees based on foreign language study also exist of course! And who knows, you may get the opportunity to enjoy a stay abroad with the Erasmus exchange program or other specific agreements!

  4. Going abroad with language travel agencies: these are organizations that offer a wide range of language courses abroad, through homestays, language schools, home lessons but also other programs such as internships or jobs, language teacher assistance... They usually offer lots of different languages to learn!

A brief overview of learning a foreign language abroad

There are many advantages to learning a foreign language abroad. Perhaps you'd like to travel the world, or land that special job or simply be able to communicate with friends from other countries.

No matter the reason, having a second language at your fingertips is an invaluable ability that can open doors and broaden your future horizons.

  • Many teens take foreign language courses at their high school and struggle to maintain their motivation, managing to learn just a few words and simple sentences. This happens because the opportunity to speak the language and become immersed in it is not available with this method.

  • The ideal way to learn a language is to live in the country where it is spoken and that is why hundreds of students make the excellent choice each year of going abroad to study a language. It is a far better way to achieve fluency by continually testing out the language. You can build confidence as you go about day-to-day activities using everyday expressions as you shop, eat, and hang out with newfound friends.

  • By using the language daily you will learn it much faster and you will get hold of the culture, enjoy new experiences, and meet new people. This is a far more enjoyable way of learning and is far superior to slugging away by yourself, immersed in textbooks and hooked up to headphones, learning through boring repetition.
