High School Portugal

HIGH SCHOOL PORTUGAL :

International students interested in discovering Portugal and the Portuguese culture will no doubt enjoy their High School year in this country. Portuguese ranks currently as the 6th most widely spoken language in the world!
Portugal is a republic situated in south-western Europe. Its boundaries are the Atlantic Ocean on the West and South and Spain on the East and North. Besides the continental area, the archipelagos of Azores and Madeira, both in the Atlantic Ocean, are part of the country. The Azores have 9 islands and Madeira 2. .

DEADLINE :

School starts in September and ends in June.
Students should arrive around the first half of September and leave around the second half of June. 

ACTIVITIES :

Attending classes is practically the only activity that takes place in Portuguese public schools. Most students interested in other activities, such as Sports, have to take them outside of school. Students will be invited to attend two weekends with local Portuguese students. They may also be invited for other informal events such as dinners or evenings out organized by the local coordinator. 

ACCOMMODATION :

Host family, full board.
Students are hosted and treated as another member of the family. Portuguese families tend to take very good care of the students they host and very often try to take them around and show them other parts of the country, but this depends on the family.

The family is still a very important element of the Portuguese social life. However, habits have changed substantially lately. Young people tend to get married later and, until then, remain living at their parents’ home. Portuguese families have very few children, one of the lowest birth rates of all Europe.

Young people have a lot of freedom to go out, from a fairly young age. They are used to being out with their peers until late hours on weekends, with the acceptance of their families.

ELIGIBILITY :

Students must be interviewed in their home country before being accepted.
A minimum of 1 year of Portuguese study and good academic results are required. Students should be able to say and understand some very basic sentences.

 

PROCEDURES :

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 15th for arrival in August. Late applications may be accepted, depending on availability and visa delays.
